Best dentist I've been to. My childhood doctor would be hurt if I told him. Lol! The hygienist was a gem. Very respectful and explained a lot. She even took photos of my problem areas so I could see them. I never had that kind of attention before. The dental assistant held my hand when they injected the numbing solution into my gums! The front desk woman even gave me a break down of all the charges before I went through with it.
Thanks for the great service. Super nice.

Veneers Can Give Your Smile a Makeover

Dr. Rena Allswang of Dearborn Family Dentistry discusses the use of porcelain laminate veneers to treat stains, chips, gaps, and other cosmetic flaws. She shares the story of replacing a patient's 20-year-old porcelain veneers and the difference it made to her smile. Whether you're getting new veneers or replacing old ones, our Dearborn, MI, dental practice can give you dazzling and natural-looking results.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-colored porcelain shells that are permanently bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Unlike crowns, dental veneers only cover the front surfaces of teeth and are mainly used to treat cosmetic issues.

Veneers crafted from porcelain are extremely long-lasting and natural-looking since porcelain mimics the qualities of natural teeth. When cared for properly, they can last for up to 10 years or more, making them a worthwhile investment.

Which types of aesthetic concerns can porcelain veneers address?

Candidates for Veneers

Before beginning treatment, you will meet with one of our Dearborn, MI, dentists to discuss your goals and determine whether dental veneers are right for you. The best candidates for veneers have...

Certain Cosmetic Imperfections

Dental veneers are designed to mask a wide range of dental imperfections, but they may not be the best form of treatment for patients with more mild or more significant dental problems. If you have surface stains on your teeth, teeth whitening alone may be sufficient. If you suffer from extensive misalignment, orthodontic treatment may be a better choice. Lastly, if you have tooth damage, crowns may provide the support you need.

Sufficient Tooth Enamel

The doctor will need to remove a thin layer of enamel to make room for your porcelain veneer. Therefore, patients must have a sufficient amount of healthy tooth enamel to qualify for treatment.

Good Oral Health

The best candidates for veneers have good oral health and no decay or periodontal disease. If you have other dental conditions, we will treat these first before recommending cosmetic dentistry.

The Desire for Permanent Change

Veneers require our dentists to make permanent alterations to the natural tooth structure, so the procedure is only a good option for patients who are committed to having porcelain veneers or another type of dental restoration for the rest of their lives.

See If You Qualify for Veneers Request a Consultation

Placing Dental Veneers A New Smile in Two Appointments

When cared for properly, veneers can last for up to a decade.
When cared for properly, veneers can last for up to a decade.

Consultation

During your initial consultation with one of our dentists, we will determine if you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers.

Preparation

At your first appointment, the dentist will first remove a very fine layer of enamel in order to create space for the veneers. If your teeth are discolored, you may choose to undergo teeth whitening so that we can match the color of your veneer to your newly whitened smile.

Impressions

Next, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth. The impressions will be sent to a trusted dental lab. While the lab is fabricating your custom veneers, our dentists will provide temporary veneers.

Placement

Typically, it takes the ceramist at the lab one to two weeks to craft your porcelain veneers. Once they are ready, you will return to the office for placement. After checking that the veneers are a precise fit, the dentist will bond them to the surface of the tooth with dental cement.

Nervous About Treatment? We Offer Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, is offered to our dental patients. While dental sedation is not necessary for dental veneer treatment, it can help ease nerves that often come with extensive dental procedures. Dearborn Family Dentistry offers nitrous oxide to patients because of the many benefits it affords:

Relieves Anxiety

Our dentists will always administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth for a virtually painless procedure, but nitrous oxide can help calm any anxiety you may have. Patients may experience numbness, lightheadedness, and an overall feeling of calm with nitrous oxide. Still, patients are conscious during the entire procedure, responding to the dentist as usual.

Quick Recovery

Unlike other sedation methods, like IV sedation or oral conscious sedation, the effects of nitrous oxide sedation wear off in only 15 minutes once the mask is removed. Since patients recover quickly from this form of sedation, they can drive themselves home, eliminating the need to arrange a ride before and after treatment.

Lightest Sedation Method

Nitrous oxide is offered to patients of all ages. It's the lightest form of dental sedation, making it a good choice for most patients. While certain medical conditions may inhibit patients from receiving IV sedation, nitrous oxide is safe for many people. Certain medical conditions do prohibit nitrous oxide use, but your dentist will thoroughly check your medical history before administering the drug.

Why We Use Porcelain

Porcelain veneers often cost more than traditional composite and resin materials. However, they are the most natural-looking option for veneers. They match the natural color of your enamel and are semi-transparent, just like your natural teeth. They are also stain-resistant and durable, making them a long-lasting cosmetic improvement. While you'll need to whiten discolored natural teeth, veneers keep their pearly white sheen over time. Take a look at the natural sheen of porcelain veneers:

Maintaining Your Porcelain Veneers

Maintaining your porcelain veneers is fairly simple. You will clean and care for them just like you would your natural teeth. Here are our recommendations for keeping your porcelain veneers looking healthy and beautiful for as long as possible...

Prevent Stains

While porcelain is resistant to stains, your natural teeth are not. In order to keep your smile a consistent bright color, refrain from eating or drinking darkly colored foods and liquids that can potentially discolor your teeth.

Avoid Excessive Force

Porcelain is an inherently strong material. However, it is still susceptible to damage. You can prevent cracks and erosion by abstaining from biting your nails, opening packages with your teeth, and eating excessively hard foods.

Floss Carefully

You should brush and floss daily to maintain the health of your whole smile. Remember to floss with care around the teeth with veneers. While it is rare, the thin shell can loosen if you are not careful. Our dentists will provide brushing and flossing tips at your biannual appointments.
