Tooth Extraction
Do You Need a Tooth Extraction? Cases for When a Tooth Extraction Is Necessary
It is always best to try and save the damaged tooth whenever possible. Our dentists only recommend extraction when it is necessary to protect the integrity of your surrounding teeth and gums. Common reasons for tooth extraction include:
Large Cavity
Extraction is necessary when a cavity is too big for a filling or a dental crown.
Dental Infection
When root canal therapy cannot fully eradicate the bacteria from a dental infection, our dentists will recommend extraction.
Health Complications
Root canal therapy isn't an option for some due to a health condition or compromised immune system. In these cases, tooth extraction is recommended.
Damaged Tooth
A severely weakened tooth or a tooth with a crack that extends below the gumline will need to be extracted.
Impacted Tooth
A tooth will need to be extracted when it is trapped under the gums or jawbone tissue. This is most commonly seen in wisdom teeth.
Crowded Teeth
We can perform tooth extraction if your incoming wisdom teeth would crowd your other teeth or if you need more room for orthodontic treatment.
Gum Disease
When left untreated, gum disease can weaken the jawbone and connective tissue around your tooth, causing the need for extraction.

"Do not go anywhere else, believe me!"
Words will not suffice to explain my amazing experience today... When Dr. Mark walked in, he explained in detail what the plan is for the day... I quickly felt at ease, and calm... He then began working on my extraction, I worked myself up preparing for the moment I hear cracking, grinding, and breaking of the tooth. I was thinking wow when is he going to start grinding?? A minute later, he told me the procedure was over! I couldn't believe my eyes/ears. I literally didnt feel anything!... he even called me in the evening to check on how I was doing! What a great doctor and staff! Do not go anywhere else, believe me! Waseem Baydoun
Restorations Our Dearborn Practice Offers To Complete Your Smile After Extraction
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge can replace one or several consecutive missing teeth. A traditional dental bridge is supported by the two teeth neighboring the gap. The two neighboring teeth are prepped so the dental bridge can fit securely on top. We also offer implant-supported bridges to provide extra support and allow your natural teeth to remain unaffected.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone to provide a sturdy base for your restorations. After a tooth is extracted, our dentists can place a dental implant in the space and connect a crown, bridge, or denture. When attached to implants, your restorations will remain secure and will not slide, shift, or slip out of place.
Implant-Supported Crown
When supported by an implant, a crown can replace a single extracted tooth to restore your oral function and appearance. A crown looks and feels just like your natural teeth, allowing you to chew, speak, and smile with ease following tooth extraction.

Follow Your Dentist's Instructions to Prevent Dry Socket
A dry socket can develop within the first few days after any adult tooth is extracted. This condition occurs when a blood clot dissolves too quickly or gets dislodged before the treatment area heals. When the blood clot is no longer present, it creates a space known as a dry socket. Dry sockets expose the underlying nerves to the air, causing intense pain. You can prevent a dry socket by following your dentist's aftercare instructions.
Healing After an Extraction Do's and Don'ts During Your Recovery
Manage Pain
The severity of your pain will vary from person to person but largely depend on the complexity of your extraction. You can usually manage any discomfort with over-the-counter medication. Use any pain medications as directed.
Reduce Swelling
Swelling can be expected following any tooth extraction. Apply a cold compress as needed to help reduce inflammation. It can also be helpful to sleep with your head propped up on pillows.
Avoid Strenuous Activity
Intense exercise or strenuous activity can increase bleeding and swelling. Wait at least three days before resuming routine exercise or strenuous lifting.
Skip Hard Foods
Hard and sticky food like chips or taffy can damage the extraction site, cause bleeding, and dislodge a blood clot. Stick to soft foods until the extraction site has fully healed.
Avoid Straws
Drinking through a straw can cause your blood clot to become dislodged and a dry socket to form. Avoid straws until your mouth has fully healed following extraction.
