Dental Crowns

Compromised teeth require protection. Dental crowns can provide damaged teeth with lasting, natural-looking support.

Dearborn Family Dentistry provides top-quality zirconia crowns that restore the function of teeth and transform their appearance.

Learn how our Dearborn, MI, dentists can use dental crowns to give you a healthy, beautiful smile.

How Do Dental Crowns Work?

A dental crown fits over the entire visible portion of your natural tooth. Crowns can be used both to protect weakened or damaged teeth and to enhance the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth that are otherwise healthy.

Your dentist will first reshape your tooth, then fit it with a temporary crown. Once your custom-made permanent crown is ready, it will be secured to your tooth to provide lasting protection and a natural look.

The Benefits of Enhancing Your Smile With Dental Crowns

This form of restorative dentistry can do wonders for your dental health and appearance.

Increased Confidence

A great smile makes an impression. Whether you choose a dental crown to restore a structurally damaged tooth or to mask deep-set dental staining, your crown can have a significant impact on the way you and others see your smile.

Improved Health

Leaving compromised teeth unprotected can invite decay and additional damage, leading to further dental work. Protecting a tooth with a dental crown can help prevent these risks and save you time and money on future treatments.

Lasting Results

Dental crowns are designed for long-term protection. With proper care and good oral hygiene, your dental crowns can retain their strength and natural appearance for more than 15 years before they need to be replaced.

Dental Crowns Cap and Protect Your Teeth

Dr. Herschel Ungar of Dearborn Family Dentistry discusses the uses of dental crowns. These durable caps can protect teeth from further decay or fractures. During your visit to our Dearborn, MI, dentist's office, we can determine the ideal material for your custom restoration.

The Advantages of Dental Crowns Over Other Treatments

Dental crowns have unique benefits when compared to other restorative treatments. Here are some reasons why your dentist might suggest a crown to address your dental needs.

Stronger Than Fillings

Fillings can very effectively treat minor damage, and tooth-colored fillings will even blend in with your smile. They are commonly used to fill the space that results after cavity treatment when all decayed tissue has been removed. However, fillings cannot repair extensive damage and only provide limited structural support to a tooth. If a large portion of your tooth has been compromised, a dental crown may be a more effective solution.

More Durable Than Bonding

Dental bonding is another common method of repairing minor damage. Bonding can improve the appearance of a chipped or cracked tooth but cannot provide the same level of support that a crown can. Additionally, the composite material used in this treatment does not possess the same strength and aesthetic properties as zirconia crowns. The results from bonding typically last for 5 to 10 years, much shorter than a well-kept crown can last.

However, not every patient will require a crown to address their specific dental issues. Your dentist will carefully review your case to determine which solution is best for you.

What to Know About Dental Crown Candidacy

There are a few important considerations your Dearborn dentist will discuss with you during your initial examination.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking or using other tobacco products can lead to gum recession and disease, which may cause your crown to loosen and the supporting tooth to become damaged. We advise patients to stop using tobacco products both for their overall health and so that they are able to enjoy the lasting protection that dental crowns can provide.

No Grinding

Though dental crowns are designed for long-term wear, the repetitive force of nighttime grinding and jaw clenching can damage them. Your dentist will screen you for bruxism during your initial consultation and recommend small lifestyle changes like a nighttime mouthguard if you have these issues.

Commitment

The preparatory shaping required for crown placement means that your natural tooth will always require a restoration to protect it from damage or decay. If you are hesitant to commit to a crown, your dentist can explain some alternative treatment options.
